Video playback is sometimes jumpy over a home network ?

I have a PC in my lounge connected via WiFi to my main desktop where my video files are all stored in a shared folder. Short of copying the files to the local HD first does anyone have any good advice to improve playback. ( I use Media Player or VLC ) Thanks.
