Question by : how to speed up an old computer?
my computer has gone so slow, what should I do to improve it?

Best answer:

Answer by arouge1786
To speed up your computer and free up space and memory for free:

Go to the Start Menu> Run
Type in “appwiz.cpl”
Uninstall whatever you don’t need.

Next, go to Start> Run and type in “msconfig”.
Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck everything you don’t want to startup. If you want, you can uncheck everything, and your anti-virus will still restart itself when you log on.

Now go to My Computer> Hard Drive> Documents and Settings> [USER NAME]> Local Settings> and delete everything inside the Temp Folder. (This is a hidden folder so you will need to have “show hidden files and folders” checked in Folder Options) All the files in this folder are just temporary files that your Internet stored for certain websites.

Next, you should install CCleaner; it will get rid of alot of temporary files on your computer. It also has a registry repair system, which is easily the best free one available on the Internet:

http://www.ccleaner.com/download

Another option is to try defragmenting your computer.
Go to the Start Menu and go to All Programs
Go to Accessories and System Tools.
Choose Disk Defragmenter and when it loads click defragment.

Next, go to Device Manger (Start> RightClick My Computer> Properties> Hardware Tab> Device Manager) and expand all listings. Now rightclick and update all drivers.

Another thing I would say is to compress your files if you already haven’t.
Open My Computer and right click on your hard drive
Check the Compress Drive button and let it do its thing.

Finally, make sure your Hard Drive doesn’t have any bad sectors. Go to My Computer> Right Click Hard Drive> Properties> Tools Tab> Check Now> Check both boxes and Start. It will ask you to reboot, so reboot. This will clear out any bad sectors on your Hard Drive.

These are short-term solutions however. The easiest way is to just upgrade the RAM on your system, but at least the ways above are free. And honestly, as long as you have at least 15% free space on you hard drive, it won’t slow your computer down, just the programs taking the space will. If you are interested in making your computer faster, I wouldn’t recommend installing Windows security updates, as these will pill up on your computer. They make the computer safer and more stable, but not faster.

Hope that helps~

Best answer: Answer by Graham LMake sure you’re new computer has a DVD-rom drive that can read the type of disc you’re using. Check the disc type, is it DVD+R, or DVD-R, or is it maybe DVD+RW, DVD-RW? Check the drive on your new computer to make sure it can read the type of DVD disc you’ve used. Also, check that the old computer is actually burning the DVD correctly by inserting it into the old computer and browsing the contents. As a double check, try loading the DVD into another computer (a friends maybe?) and see what happens. This will help you determine whether it’s the disc or the new computer. You need to go into your control panel and then to power options and select from the drop-down list located on the advanced tab that when you press the power button to shut-down. then you need to run not only your antivirus but also run an adware scan as well…..you can find free programs like spybot search and destroy, spyware blaster, and adaware at www.download.com

Just about all modern LCD computer monitors are not integrated speaker systems, additionally laptops normally only contain simple speakers, which means purchasing a better-quality set of home pc speakers is as basic as investing in a printer.

Do you understand the several type of PC speaker systems available? In this article are the actual primary varieties of speaker systems designed for computers or MACs:

Image by TehBoris Computer Job – Hunting Friend Or Foe? How Do the 40+ Year Olds Set Goals Toward A New Career? Many of us in our mid-forties or older still need good careers. Not only because our 401k’s, IRA’s and other retirement funds have been hit hard, but also to feel like we are using our talents to their best potential. In the past twelve months, I have found myself stumbling a lot. My career as a new residential construction specialist dried up. Having been in the housing industry for so long, it is hard for other industries to look past that. They also hesitate that I may not meet their requirements when it comes to office skills, primarily all the new technology via computer and its online networks. So how do you find your way through this new maze of job searching, interviewing and being able to express that you do have some technology talent? 1. Get online and surf.
Computer Job – Hunting Friend Or Foe?

Sounds simple enough but by referring the local Workforce Centers who may have a pre-typed list of sites that you may want to visit online you’ll gain a great head start.

Read through several job listings and how they categorize the different jobs. The “lingo” may have changed over the years and you may discover new job titles for the very same fields you have worked in years ago. For example – Sales Assistant may now be called Marketing or Sales Support Specialist. A loading dock receiver position may now be called transportation management and include a variety of other tasks beyond just receiving and shipping.

2. Set-up a Favorites or Bookmarks on your computer so you can easily go back and reference these sites.

3. Develop a Resume and Cover Letter that you could possibly post to the job websites. Keep it on your hard drive so you can easily make changes and upload into an application.

Most companies prefer you to apply online.

4. Create your own spreadsheet for managing the jobs you submit your application to. This spreadsheet should include the date of submission and time, the name of the company, department or contact name, job title applying for and follow-up date. Make sure to keep any information on how to re-contact them (email address, mailing address, phone or fax).

5. Prepare a hardcopy Resume to mail in addition to the online application. If it is a position you really want to go after and they will not accept phone calls then make sure to send a hardcopy resume in the mail as well. Indicate in the letter that you have also sent via email on a specific date as well. Most companies are overwhelmed by online applications and if you did not have the keywords that brought you to the forefront – this may be another way to reach the eyes of the decision makers.

6. If you are already on Face book, Twitter or Linked-In – make sure that you’re presenting the image you are ok with if a potential employer goes out and Google’s your name. My suggestion is if you are seriously looking for employment to either remove yourself completely from Face book and Twitter or do a lot of clean-up on your profile and future “conversations”. Linked-In is a power house for business professionals to network so it is a great place to be but once again make sure the information is accurate and use spell check.

7. Attend local networking groups. In our city we have a printed list (10 pages) of various networking groups meeting at various days and times throughout the week. Not only is this a great way to present your 30-second “elevator speech” but it is also a way to get yourself in front of others who may know of a company that is looking. Many groups offer insight on how-to improve your presentation, critique your resume or make suggestions on where to get advanced training or skills that you may be lacking.

8. Teach yourself new skills. Many of the technology skills can be self-taught on your home computer system. You can also visit the libraries for various “How-To” books and attend their often free workshops. Workforce Centers also offer ongoing training sessions on various topics.

9. Volunteer. If you have a hobby or passion apply yourself to the numerous opportunities that exist by volunteering. I have volunteered for senior citizen programs, habitat for humanity, special needs children therapy riding, and assisting in our local nature parks. This helps you keep a positive perspective, gets you involved with others and may help you rediscover a talent or skill that you could apply toward a new career. Employers also like the fact that you are not tucked away in a mole hole – waiting for someone to drop something into your lap. Many great jobs have come along simply by getting to know others in their communities and volunteering.

10. Don’t be hard on yourself. Make sure that you spend quality time with family and friends. Let them know you are looking for a new career opportunity and if they would share the word. Often, those around you may see something that you overlooked about yourself and gladly make the recommendation or suggestion to a potential employer.

Those of us that did not have computers in our life on a daily basis, like they are today do find this new way of job searching and skill set requirements a little scary. What I have discovered is that I need to balance every single day with time both on the computer and getting out into the community to network. Some days it feels overwhelming and a daunting task. I know have a file box full of rejection notices but I keep them all so I can learn how I can improve on my presentation for the next one. I also have learned a lot about myself. What I thought I would like for a new career many times was simply a “hurry get a paycheck” and there was no real passion or desire to be in that role.

Is all this time on the computer bringing me closer to a reward or is it like playing a game? Surfing on the computer can easily get you sidetracked so keep a “to do” list and stick to it. Recheck your spread sheet daily so you know which jobs you have heard back from or maybe you need to do more follow-up. Stay on track, keep your focus and you’ll get what you need to done.

Question by I ♥ Cujo: Can I get my Firefox bookmarks off my computer if it’s switched off? My computer crashed and won’t turn on, and I haven’t backed up my bookmarks in a while, so I’m screwed, right? Or does Firefox perhaps just store bookmarks somewhere on your hard drive without you actually putting them there and I can just remove the hard drive and transfer it to another computer? Or is it like iGoogle where I can just sign in with a password on someone else’s computer and get them? Best answer: Answer by ChloeSimplest answer is it’s on your Hard Drive somewhere Firefox stores them so option A, but you’d have to plug it into another computer that’s compatible with your Hard drives design. UNLESS you, at some point created a Firefox sync profile, in which case you can run Firefox on another computer, activate your profile on that computer, and then simply download everything back onto your computer.
