Query by x Ridiculous Tink and Moi x: Is it far better to start creating a novel in a notebook or typed up on a pc?

I’ve started on laptop or computer, as it’s much quicker, but if I create it i can carry it about and include ideas. Really should I carry on the laptop or computer or transfer it to notebook?

Properly with a notebook you can consider it about with you and if you see something that ‘inspires’ you, you can compose it down.

I think it should be the easiest way you get your ideas down. I prefer to use a computer because I can type much faster than I can write and it’s easier to get things down before they go from memory. Plus I can imagine the aching hands I’d get using pen and paper.

I definitely prefer a notebook btu maybe that’s just because I love to doodle (and you can’t doodle on a computer lol)

I would say in a notebook. That way you can bring it with you and not have to worry about battery power.

It really depends on the author. Some people cannot be creative on a computer and need to write. I am not good at writing because I type so much. Just do what feels comfortable to you.

you can carry the note book around and scribble random things you think of in it that could help you write.

its best to type it, because then you don’t have to transfer it.

then again, if you write your draft in a note book you automatically edit it when you type it up.

typed on the cdomputer.. it would be easier if you wanted to publish it as a book. and your hand wouldnt hurt haha

I would say whatever way you find works for you. Some people (like me) type faster than we write and can think quicker and more creatively typing. Others need the pen to paper contact.

Just do it and stop procrastinating. That is the hardest part.

if you’re a fast typer on a computer
    it is easier and faster
and like that you can let your ideas just flow….

I think this depends on your personal style, do you write better on a computer or a notebook? Which one allows more ideas and flow of thoughts than the other? Which one is more practical to you?

perhaps you can try writing in a notebook when you are out, like when you get ideas then when you get home write it in the computer. Using both would not be a bad idea :) if you do use a computer be sure to make backups often onto discs in case the computer dies.

    a notebook

It’s best to write in the way that’s best for you, as long as it helps you keep writing!

If you tend to write well in the free moments of your day when a computer’s not around, then a notebook would be good for you. If you have your computer around often, and you find it faster/easier to write on a computer, then write on a computer.

Everyone’s different – there’s no “right” way to write a book. There’s just trying and seeing if it works for you!

    Hope that helps!

I say notebook because you can take it everywhere instead of lugging a laptop (if you use one) around. And since you’ll be able to read through it anytime like when you’re going to bed, you can just read it from your bed instead of getting up to use the computer XD

probably notebook to get ideas from your surroundings and you can think of ideas for the book and stuff like that. and you can bring it anywhere.

Personally I’d rather write it down first but it depends on the person

i think starting to write in your notebook is easier, rather than you having to go to inspirational places and then putting your laptop or something on when its much easier to write, then while you are typing you can make changes this will be so much better for you, good luck with your novel.x

I prefer using a notebook to start with, then computer for second drafts.

  18. toucanstan21 on February 22, 2011 at 4:01 am

for me, anything i write, i do it on paper first and then type it up later.
that way i can edit it easily and take my writing with me.
and you end up going over it a lot more, so you’ll have a better chance of catching mistakes.

  19. K27 on February 22, 2011 at 4:18 am

They are both good places and also bad places.
Notebooks are better because you can bring them with you and if you get inspired by something you can jot it down

Computers are better because they auto correct your spelling grammer and so on but you are taking the chance of your computer crashing and loosing your novel.

Good luck and I hoped I helped

I think its better on the computer.
If you had it in a notebook, and got water on it or something, then it would be gone.
But on a computer you can back-up your files.
It also looks more professional when printed, if you plan on sending it to a publishers.
Also if you wanted to change something, you could do it quickly and easily.
However, you could carry a notebook around for when you get a creative impulse, and then type it up later.

My advice is take the best of both worlds :D

Typed on a computer, that way it will be easier to fix mistakes and to change it around. A note book is great too for writing down ideas and stuff.

I prefer writing in a notebook……..because your writing will make you feel….you know…….positively proud and good…….it has a personal touch…….you can admire it……….
Best of luck for your novel!!!!!!!!!!!!

Write however you feel the most comfortable at. I use to write longhand all the time. Then I got Rheumatoid and over the years have lost the ability to write very long at a time. It’s taken a while but I can type with two fingers, one on each hand. I’ve finally started writing again. I have a desktop and a netbook now. The netbook is great for carring around at only ten inches! Very light too!
Whatever way you feel comfortable at. of course, you can do both! Write your ideas down on paper, when your at odd places if need be and the transfer them into you story on the computer!
    Happy writing!

Almost nothing of literary significance has appeared since the prevalence of the computer came about. Food for thought. A laptop may be quicker and easier, but is writing supposed to be quick and easy? I never thought so.

  25. jacquie s on February 22, 2011 at 6:51 am

Notebooks are good to keep with you for jotting down the odd idea or anything you may see or hear on your journeys. But in whole, it’s best typed straight on to the computer, easier to correct and re-write as you feel. I have notebooks scattered all over the house and in my bag too, crammed with all kinds of cliches and sayings. I have so much collected now that I’m finding it hard thinking about what to put where in any of my stories.

Purely personal choice; whichever works for you. Personally I prefer paper and pen to jot down my thoughts.

  27. penny m on February 22, 2011 at 7:01 am

Personally, I think a notebook. You can take it with you, and you never know when something interesting happens that you can include in one of your stories. You could get a laptop though.

For me it depends. It’s easier at school and such to just have a notebook to write whenever you feel like it, because you can just leave off. But sometimes I change moods and typing is a lot faster. I usually just transfer my writing from my notebook to my laptop so I can take off from there. :)

Help me with my story too? :)

writers’ tend to keep a notebook to write down ideas and use a pc or whatever pen and paper to write the actual story

  30. FireworksFox on February 22, 2011 at 8:19 am

What I do is write it in a notebook first so I can carry it about and write down any ideas that come to me when I’m out or not able to access a computer. After writing it in a notebook I transfer it to the computer so there is a back up and a neat version then save it to disk. Good luck with yours – and if you’ve already started on computer just transfer it to a pad – also writing in a pad will improve your handwriting and punctuation and the legibility of your writing and the quality and, overtime you can write as quick as you can type =)

    Computer
most publishers would refuse to read a handwritten manuscript
and god it would take forever to copy a whole novel from a notebook to a computer lol!
but you should still carry a notebook around, and just jot down your ideas in that. You can add them to the novel on the computer later.
    hope this helped :)
