Question by iamtheactor: Can you use the HTC Desire to provide an internet connection for your laptop?
Hi! I am considering the HTC Desire.
Can you use the HTC Desire to provide internet to your laptop by connecting them?
(I am thinking that this would eliminate the need for a wireless dongle)

There’s at least one app in the store that will allow you to tether, but it’s costs.
What do you think? Answer below!

Yes, but…
1) You need an app, such as PDANet or Proxoid, both offer free evals.
2) Most phone companies frown upon “tethering”, which is what you’re trying to do. I am doing it right now on my Motorola Droid and my laptop. My phone company’s stance is while not prohibited, it is not supported and not recommended.
3) Be sure your data plan supports the use of such things. Average web surfing with NO VIDEO is about 10-20 megs of data per hour, in my own experience. If your data plan is NOT unlimited (and even such plans actually have a 5GB per MONTH cap) the overage charges will kill you, not literally of course.

If you don’t share books with strangers, why share music?
i have the htc desire and if you just connect the phone via a usb wire to your computer it will ask what u want to do with that connection so just select the last one which says share internet connection or something
use this as a replacement only if u have an unlimited internet contract or something
and i think u can do this for free if u use a usb wire
u can also turn ur phone into a wifi router using ur phones internet connection
the app is available in the android market and i think its free but it will ask u to enable root acess
this might void ur warranty
best bet is to just use the usb wire as u connect something to a computer if u use a usb dongle
