Question by Kelly W: I have XP Residence on my pc, I require to update to XP Professional, do I just obtain XP Expert Update?
I have XP Home Edition on my pc, but I need to have XP Professional for networking wants. Am I correct in stating that I just need to obtain XP Expert improve? This will then adjust my running technique from Home to Expert?

You’re right in your thinking, but why do you need to upgrade? I mean, for the price you’ll pay, what do you want from XP Pro that you don’t have in XP Home? Is it really worth it?

But, if you DO decide to upgrade, make sure you make a complete backup of all your important files, because (unless I’m sadly mistaken), your hard disk will be reformatted. Just make sure you have the original XP Home installation CD because at one point it will ask you to insert the prior copy into the CD drive, and if you don’t have it, you’re in serious trouble, because you can’t back out of your installation at that point (I MAY be wrong, but I don’t think so).

    In either case, good luck.

Why not just upgrade to Vista OS? Don’t spend money on old stuff.

XP Pro adds asp functionality to the IIS that is not offered with the home version. That is pretty much the only thing I see that would be important enough to upgrade. And even then, there are ways around it.

But if you buy the upgrade, if you ever need to reinstall, you’ll have to install home, and then upgrade it again. You can upgrade from a full xp pro version as well, but you can’t install from nothing with an upgrade. So it really depends on the price.

Also, an upgrade will not reformat your computer, but you would still want to make backups in case something bad happens and it cannot recover next time. (power outage and such)

    Kelly,
You probably don’t need the pro version of XP.
However, if you do go ahead…do have your files backed-up..you won’t have your hard drive reformatted unless you opt for a ‘clean install’, your old files will be retained but may be filed in a new folder for your old system, if you simply upgrade. You may well need to verify that you are eligible for an upgrade using the previous system disk, but this is not always the case. I’ve upgraded several users and only had a request for verification once. BUT, don’t worry about VISTA yet. It may look cool, but the programming world is far from happy with it at present, still too many bugs being ironed out. Plus, most software is readily available for XP and more cheaply too.

    Good Luck.

Word of warning before taking up Holly’s suggestion. Vista is both processor and memory hungry. Dont even think of upgrading unless you have at least a dual core processor, even then you will need 2gb of memory as a minimum.

Yes, you can upgrade to XP PRO form XP HOME…just purchase the XP PRO upgrade.

For you people that do not know the major advantage of XP PRO over HOME….

You cannot put Home on a Domain. Period.
