Question by AngelicFruitcake♥: Is it possible to have a webcam built into my laptop?
I have seen laptops with webcams built into them, I was wondering if I take my laptop to a laptop shop or something is it possible for them to build a webcam into the laptop I have now? My normal webcam won’t balance on top of it and I don’t wanna buy a new laptop! lol
How much money are we talking, more than a new laptop would cost?! What do you guys mean about shops not doing it because of the warranty, I don’t understand? Sounds a good idea about getting a webcam that clips on!
What clip on webcams would you recommend for an HP laptop?
Also I’ve never heard of Best Buy and know nothing about which shops are trustworthy

    Yaaaa get mac

  4. Brad F on December 28, 2011 at 6:02 pm

No I dont think they will do that anywhere

  5. Mr. Q on December 28, 2011 at 6:20 pm

no, you have to buy a new laptop that comes with a built in webcam.

  6. ankur2000uk on December 28, 2011 at 6:24 pm

I don’t think that is possible as you cannot punch a hole into your laptop.

  7. David R on December 28, 2011 at 7:14 pm

    no

  8. Kayleen Z on December 28, 2011 at 7:24 pm

no all you have to do is buy a webcame and set it up

  9. dancin4jesus23 on December 28, 2011 at 7:45 pm

maybe you would just have to see!!
it would probably be expensive. it might be cheaper just to buy one with it biult in

    yeah I have one
    It is a Dell Inspiron

    Hope that helps!

i have one it came with it!

I think it’s possible, but it would cost a lot of money. You can always try and ask, but don’t forget to write down your laptop specifications, or bring your laptop with you.

  13. David on December 28, 2011 at 10:04 pm

    No. I don’t think so.

  14. jtk21351 on December 28, 2011 at 10:56 pm

No, that’s something only a hardware hacker could do. A store will never do that for you, because it involves opening the laptop case, which would void your warranty.

    ya time and money!
    I THINK I HAVENT TRIED

  16. goodluv_bus on December 28, 2011 at 11:13 pm

It would probably be easier to rig the webcam with a clip or something to stay on top of the laptop or buy one that can attach versus trying to have one built in.

  17. Du Emma nn on December 28, 2011 at 11:51 pm

It would be very difficult to do this. What kind of laptop? sometimes you can get ones that will clip ontop. to build one in they would have to replace your screen, so if you are under waranty there would have to be damaged.

    Good luck

you can bring your laptop to the store and ask them if they can build a webcam into your laptop.

  19. Abdullah on December 29, 2011 at 1:06 am

No i don’t think you can

  20. Ricky J. on December 29, 2011 at 1:43 am

Yes you can but it’s a touchy mod. I’d get it to a shop for something like that.

  21. lidia on December 29, 2011 at 2:19 am

Unless you know some serious technical whizzes who don’t mind voiding your warranty I think its safe to say you would have to a buy a new laptop. Laptop cameras that are built in have that from day one!

  24. Aim =] on December 29, 2011 at 4:29 am

umm proberly not, but you can get laptop webcams!

they have a hook to hook onto your screen, only like £5

    =]

    -i got one :)

  25. Bambi Berkowicz on December 29, 2011 at 5:22 am

No, you can’t do that. You could buy a new one or you could find a box for it to sit on behind the laptop screen.

  26. Davis F on December 29, 2011 at 5:28 am

You have probably seen the apple macbooks with the webcams built in. I think there are some dell models with this too. Yes, you can have it built in, but it will cost you a lot. I’m not sure of any shops that will do it, definitely not Geek Squad or anything. I’d suggest going with a smaller, custom computer shop. They will do it.

  27. Genius on December 29, 2011 at 6:27 am

I have my laptop built into my webcam, so I guess that can happen the reverse way too.. so Yes, it’s possible!

  28. access.united on December 29, 2011 at 7:08 am

Well, It would be more practical to buy a new laptop. To have a webcam built you would probably have to contact a professional. Otherwise, plan on buying a webcam, taking it apart, cutting up the case of the computer, getting a internal wore (unless you want wires sticking out of your laptop), finding compatible hardware, etc.

Not sure but it’s better if it’s not buit in, because it’s easier to chat with people if you don’t want to show your face or if you want to show only a part of your body.

  30. riley2126 on December 29, 2011 at 8:52 am

That would be very hard to do. I know HP and Microsoft make clip on cams for laptops, maybe try one of those.

  31. Kaitlyn on December 29, 2011 at 8:58 am

For the amount of money that you would spend doing, you’re much better off getting a Logitech Quick Cam Pro 9000. They go for about 60 on Amazon and they are a great cam that has a special “clip” that makes it clip on the back of your laptop. Or take your computer to best buy and they will help you find one that fits.

I have a built in cam and they tend to be a bit annoying bc you can’t position the cam the way you want, ETC…plus I’m not even sure exactly HOW somebody could build a cam into your laptop…it would still be an external device just attached to your computer, if that makes sense.

Plus adding updates like that nulls the warranty on your laptop, and so that’s totally not worth it IMHO.

I believe your only way out is to either buy a laptop with a webcam built in like apple laptops or buy a webcam for laptops that they sell with a clamp

im sure there is away to

  34. shear bear on December 29, 2011 at 11:04 am

Im not too sure sweety, but technology is SO advanced now. I don’t think it’s impossible. You should try calling or going to your loca Best Buy and try asking those “Geek Squad” people. If they’re unable to build a webcam into your computer, they should be able to put one on top of it and make it stay.

  35. el3ph4nt@ymail.com on December 29, 2011 at 12:03 pm

is very possible but dont go to a high street retailer take it to an independent bt trustworthy computer store

  36. Edima on December 29, 2011 at 12:42 pm

well it depends on the specs of the computer you have
Also it is very possible but would be costly probably $ 200 dollars upwards
Check a computer shop in your area
Places like best buy, future shop, circuity city i doubt do those kind of stuff

  37. Lord Owen on December 29, 2011 at 1:30 pm

It would be possible, but it would involve drilling a hole in the laptop’s case. Worse yet, it would be around the screen which is often a bit harder to disassemble than the rest of the computer and any of this would probably void the warrenty. If there is no space for the webcam once the screen is open, then you’ve risked the disassembly step for no reason.

Why don’t you just get a new webcam or at least a better mounting device for it? And by a better mounting device, I mean if you can live without a bit of your screen, just put the webcam in a plastic sandwich bag, drape it over the top of the screen, then tape the top of it to the top edge of the screen. Might degrade the image quality a bit, but it should work and you probably can’t get any simpler or cheaper way to solve this problem.

A little bit more sophisticated method (and I do mean a little) is to get some poster putty (most stores that sell office supplies have it) and use it as temporary glue to keep the webcam in place.

If you are willing to do some construction, get a pair of tinner’s snips from a place like Sears, a couple of sheet metal screws, a metal soup can, and a large clip like the ones they make for bags of chips but it should have a stronger spring so it has a good grip on the top of the screen. Cut the top and bottom off of the soup can with the snips, then down one side so you get a rectangle. You can then cut the botton corners out of the sheet of metal. Do so such that when you’re done, the tab that is left on the bottom is the size of the bottom of your web cam. Cut the rest of it such that the parts that stick out to the left and right are a bit wider than your web cam. Cut the top off so that it is about the height of your web cam. Bend the bottom up for something for the webcam to sit on, and the left and right tabs around so they go around the side of the webcam and part way around the front. Trim them if they get in the way of the lens. Use the two screws to attach the metal box to the clip. Now you have a webcam clip. Tinner’s snips will be about $ 10 but you can make all kinds of cool stuff with them using similar techniques. The other stuff you can get for very little or nothing.

Be creative and I’m sure you can find a way to solve this problem without having to get a new laptop. Just be careful with the laptop and webcam.

Built in webcams aren’t so great anyway. I hear they die really quickly.

  38. sp33dstix on December 29, 2011 at 1:42 pm

Yup. Only if you have some 1337 h4ck5.
It has been done, but if not done professionaly will look pretty bad.
Better off getting a clip on.
