Back then, computers were used as ENORMOUS calculators. They could do only the most simple of math problems such as (PEMDAS) and were even slower than today’s $ 2 calculators.

As previously stated, there were no “computers” per se. Nowadays, we call PCs computers. There were no PCs. Only ENORMOUS calculators about the size of a warehouse.

The first electronic programmable computer is widely held to be Colossus, developed in 1942-43 in Station X, Bletchly Park, England. It was used to crack the Enigma codes which were encrypted orders relayed by the Germans in WWII. Technically, the first computers are mere calculators. This is what the computers do, but they are processed in a way that shows up what you see on the screen.

They were used for: data processing, telephone exchanges, complex calculations, traffic signal control, there are a few more applications that I can’t remember. Also in that era, data entry technician was still a viable career path, since automated data entry hadn’t been developed. Even back then they were used for playing games. One of the driving forces behind the development of Unix was that Dennis Ritchie and Brian Thompson were trying to get a game called Space Travel to work on a Digital PDP-7. There were two classes of computers for the most part: large mainframes, such as those produced by IBM, General Electric, et al. There were also Mini computers like those made by the Digital Equipment Corporation, Wang Laboratories, and Data General.
