I mean like a chat box or something similar, infrared, bluetooth that kinda thing. Maybe something I could download to a memory stick and chat through? Must be compatible with XP and Vista.

yes there are a number of ways.
1) buy a router or a switch.

Cheapest but requires a little knowledge.
2) buy a cross over cable for your Ethernet port.
Since there is no DHCP server available.
Must configure IP addresses manually.
Usually 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 will work
subnet of 255.255.255.0 or you can configure 1 PC to server as DHCP.

3) install a wireless card in each PC, and buy a wireless router.

PS: Stay away from Hubs if you plan to play games.

There are many ways to link two computers:

    1. Use a switch, router or a hub: the cheapest and fastest way. You can link many computers this way. A router has the specific advantage that if you also have a internet connection, you can share that connection to both computers.
    2. Use a crossover network cable: you can link only two computers this way, it’s also very fast.
    3. If the two computers have bluetooth, you can network them using bluetooth. This is very slow for file copy though. The advantage is that the normal network ports (where you would plug the cables) are free and you can still connect one or both to the internet independently.
    4. Infrared networking is possible but it’s the slowest and the computers must be within 5 meters of each other, in a certain position.

Well actually if you have a wireless network card in your computer….you can set up an ad-hoc wireless network…

This makes PC A as a kinda host and other users (i.e PC B, PC C, etc) enabling this feature, be the clients…then u can share files and stuff….and best thing is u, don’t need internet…just the wireless card whether USB or built-in)…

Try finding “Wireless Network Connection” and look for the ad-hoc function in the Control Panel..configure the settings accordingly…
