Issue by Silverpatrick: Acquiring a new personal computer, Can I acquire most graphics cards?
I am acquiring a new pc these days with windows vista. It will have a pretty excellent processor but in my finances five hundred-700 pound possibly a very poor graphics card as far as gaming is concerned.
I place it to you that if I purchased the pc , would most graphics cards on the market be appropriate to install inside the laptop or computer to substitute the current ‘poor’ one particular?
I am anxious if I purchase a pc with a nvidia graphics card I can’t use an ATI one particular in the long term. I have my eye on the ATI 4850
Notice- The a single I by will have a dedicated graphics card.

as extended you have a PCI-express you can use equally nvidia and ati video clip cards. The ati hd 4850 is a great card for the cost and efficiency. The newest cards are PCI-express 2. but cards that are even now 1. can nonetheless operate on PCI-e two. and a card manufactured for two. can nonetheless operate on one.
The splendor of pc there are heading to backward compatibility of some sort or a adapter …. for some time now.

If the computer you buy has a dedicated graphics PCIe x16 (2.0) expansion port then it should be compatible with every card currently in production.

gho~ thats incorrect.
The other variable the Asker needs to take into consideration is the capacity of the power supply. If its inadequate to run the card, there’s no point slotting it in because it wotn run without enough power.
So you might want to check that you have at least a 450 watt power supply if you want to put it into the machine. Also, if its a mini atx case you may run into problems. Obviously there needs to be enough height clearance for the card (fine with any mid or full size case) and lateral clearance ie that the cpi-slot next to the pci-e slot is not going to preclude the card (probably not an issue with a 4850 with a standard cooler in it as they are reasonably narrow)
