Linux will run fine on those specs and for the uses you gave is fine.

There are many different versions of linux, the best beginner ones are probably ubuntu, fedora core, opensuse, mint or mandriva (maybe not as popular but its the first I started with).

i’d probably suggest ubuntu there is a program on the disc called wubi that will install it from inside windows preventing the need to repartition etc that would be perfect for a beginner, i think it also allows uninstallation from windows. there is also a huge online community and its generally easy to find help by searching for something like “ubuntu how do I install …”.

most of the basic applications will be there when you first install it and there are a number of them that you may already be familiar with from windows, firefox, openoffice, thunderbird etc

I installed windows 7 ultimate VL (Volume Licence) from work it workd fine untill the dreaded updates then it died.. it keeps saying do not shut down you computer installing updates 24 of 50 and it’s been saying that for over 2 weeks now. then i called the geek squad and they installed vista business and ruined my HP COMPAQ Recovery Partition in the progress. if you guys know of a way to access the recovery partition with out F11 key (it dosen’t recognise the keyboard at start up) then that would be cool
