To speed up your computer and free up space and memory for free:

Go to the Start Menu> Run
Type in “appwiz.cpl”
Uninstall whatever you don’t need.

Next, go to Start> Run and type in “msconfig”.
Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck everything you don’t want to startup. If you want, you can uncheck everything, and your anti-virus will still restart itself when you log on.

Now go to My Computer> Hard Drive> Documents and Settings> [USER NAME]> Local Settings> and delete everything inside the Temp Folder. (This is a hidden folder so you will need to have “show hidden files and folders” checked in Folder Options) All the files in this folder are just temporary files that your Internet stored for certain websites.

Next, you should install CCleaner; it will get rid of alot of temporary files on your computer. It also has a registry repair system, which is easily the best free one available on the Internet:

Another option is to try defragmenting your computer.
Go to the Start Menu and go to All Programs
Go to Accessories and System Tools.
Choose Disk Defragmenter and when it loads click defragment.

Next, go to Device Manger (Start> RightClick My Computer> Properties> Hardware Tab> Device Manager) and expand all listings. Now rightclick and update all drivers.

Another thing I would say is to compress your files if you already haven’t.
Open My Computer and right click on your hard drive
Check the Compress Drive button and let it do its thing.

Finally, make sure your Hard Drive doesn’t have any bad sectors. Go to My Computer> Right Click Hard Drive> Properties> Tools Tab> Check Now> Check both boxes and Start. It will ask you to reboot, so reboot. This will clear out any bad sectors on your Hard Drive.

These are short-term solutions however. The easiest way is to just upgrade the RAM on your system, but at least the ways above are free. And honestly, as long as you have at least 15% free space on you hard drive, it won’t slow your computer down, just the programs taking the space will. If you are interested in making your computer faster, I wouldn’t recommend installing Windows security updates, as these will pill up on your computer. They make the computer safer and more stable, but not faster.

Make sure you’re new computer has a DVD-rom drive that can read the type of disc you’re using. Check the disc type, is it DVD+R, or DVD-R, or is it maybe DVD+RW, DVD-RW?

Check the drive on your new computer to make sure it can read the type of DVD disc you’ve used.

Also, check that the old computer is actually burning the DVD correctly by inserting it into the old computer and browsing the contents.

As a double check, try loading the DVD into another computer (a friends maybe?) and see what happens. This will help you determine whether it’s the disc or the new computer.

If none of this resolves the issue, you could try using a USB memory stick to transfer the files between computers. Much easier and faster than using DVD’s.

whatever you downloaded may have changed some of your settings and could actually be some sort of Trojan that is making the computer stay on so your connection can be used by a bot. (i know its tech jargon but its what its called).
You need to go into your control panel and then to power options and select from the drop-down list located on the advanced tab that when you press the power button to shut-down. then you need to run not only your antivirus but also run an adware scan as well…..you can find free programs like spybot search and destroy, spyware blaster, and adaware at www.download.com

United Nations? specialized agency the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the International Multilateral Partnership Against Cyber Threats (IMPACT) yesterday held the world?s first cross border drill exercise by an international organization and a United Nations agency.

The inaugural cyber-drill was launched by ITU-IMPACT ALERT (Applied Learning for Emergency Response Team), and comprised a simulated cyber attack response linking the Computer Emergency Response Team/Computer Incident Response Teams (CERT/CIRT) of Cambodia, Lao P.D.R., Myanmar and Viet Nam (the CLMV countries) with executing experts from ITU-IMPACT. The one-day drill was held in conjunction with the ITU-ASEAN Sub-regional CSIRT/CIRT/CERT Workshop for CLMV countries in Yangon, Myanmar.

IMPACT, the cybersecurity executing arm of ITU, is the largest cybersecurity alliance of its kind in the world, with 137 partner countries now formally part of the ITU-IMPACT coalition, and with strong support from global industry giants, partners from academia and international organizations.

The cyber drill was a simulated and coordinated exercise to assess the cybersecurity emergency readiness of CLMV countries and their incident response capabilities in mitigating and countering cyber attacks. The exercise helped build greater international cooperation between participating countries, and improved their communication and mitigation processes. It was also unique in that it was deliberately designed to involve countries with differing developing status ? one rapidly growing developing country (Viet Nam) and three UN-designated Least Developed Countries ? Cambodia, Lao P.D.R and Myanmar. That meant that the exercise was able to take into account the real-life constraints faced by many economies in the developing world. An important aspect of the drill was the involvement of countries at the regional level.

Question by LEON: Should I repair my laptop or buy another one?
At the moment I have a HP Compaq nc6220. It has a fault freezing up all the time ( I think some chip on the mother board is faulty MAX 1987 or something…) any way it’s gonna cost about £200 to fix. I’m in two minds whether to fix it or buy another.

I actually like the laptop a lot, even more so than my old macbook pro’s, which both had hard drive problems.

It will be a lot economically wise to buy a new one.
As a level 3 (ITC) student technician i would recommend the 10 inch Advent 4211. 80 GIG Hard Drive/1.6 GHZ/Blue Tooth/Wireless Lan/Web Cam and Mic/ 1 GIG DDR2 SODIMM RAM Upgradable to 2 GIG (Which i have done) It’s the only cheap small laptop that is upgradable to Vista if you wanted to but i would stay on XP, which is the standard operating system that come with the machine. You can even play some old PS1 games like call of duty and castle wolfenstien. 1.2Kg’s & £270. Good luck!

CPU temperature is too high may be caused by defective design, program load too heavy, fan failure or dust to blur.
