Question by : My Daewoo Freeview PVR freezes and says ‘Please wait while the hard disk is initialised’?
My Daewoo PVR is frequently freezing and displaying, ‘Please wait while the hard disk is initialized’. This is extremely annoying as it stops recording anything and starts up again. What do I need to do?

Problems like this can be notoriously difficult to pin down and fix, but here’s a few suggestions that might help:

Try turning the PVR off (turn it off at the mains) and leave it off for 24 hours.

Check that there is nothing metal/magnetic next to the unit – I once came across a case of where the clients 3 year old son ‘discovered’ that his magnetic toys would stick to the bottom of the PVR making an interesting (to him anyway!) clunking noise. Unfortunately, it stopped the disc rotating properly, causing the problem. Removed the toy, easy fix, happy Mum (but less happy 3 yr old!)

Check to see if there are any software updates you can install – all though if the hard disk is not firing up, you may not be able to install them.

It may just be that the problem is terminal – repair bills could quickly exceed the cost of a new machine.

If you’re looking for a replacement – and just want to watch and record digital TV – then you can’t go too far wrong with a Humax PVR9150. Should cost a shade under £130.

Would love to find out if you fix the problem – so I can use it to help others in the future.

Jeff

Read in the manual about ‘format hdd” as most new pvrs should have this done, it will increase Reliability and Performance and is probably all yours needs
