Although this may not be what you had in mind, just as a side note have you looked into installing a Linux distro as it is more secure than windows or mac os, antivirus aside? There is also antivirus software for linux as well.

At the moment I use Eset Smart Security 5 it seems to be doing what it says on the tin. Others may beg to differ

OK, maybe this can help you decide, here is a comparison of the major AV’s page 13 has the final ratings:
    http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/dyn/wpdt2011_1_en.pdf

I would also get these two programs:
    http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?tag=rb_content;main

    http://download.cnet.com/SuperAntiSpyware-Free-Edition/3000-8022_4-10523889.html?tag=dropDownForm;productListing

These two programs, unless you buy, don’t give you live protection, but are the best in detection, and removal.

    For added security install the WOT add-on into your browser, and only go to/shop at sites with a green rating;

    Good luck.

The absolute best is AVG Internet Security, I use and recommend it, leave all the useless freebies alone or mark my words you will wish you had, Anti Virus, Anti Spyware, Anti Spam,Firewall, Link Scanner, Resident Shield, Family Safety, Live Kive, Email Scanner,Update Manager, Online Shield,Anti Rootkit, System Tools, PC Analyser, have to pay extra for this, not much use anyway, Identity Protection. Number of people currently protected by AVG100 million
Number of threats AVG identify and stop every 30 days3 billionUse a free one by all means and it could very well cost more than AVG in down time and loss of goodies.

dont pay for antivirus. free ones are as good as paid ones.
use avast, it is the most popular antivirus in the world and it is a lot better than avg because avg makes your pc slow to death.

for a free firewall, use the award winning comodo firewall

People say it’s Norton but apparently Norton slows your computer. What I’ve been told is that Kaspersky Internet Security doesn’t affect your computer’s speed and works great against viruses and such so I’d say Kaspersky.

BitDefender 2012 haas been rated the #1 in windows internet security by Cnet, and I haven’t used any other anti-virus that I like more than this one. I pirated it from a torrent, and It works and updates until 2050. It includes a feature called “auto-pilot”, which makes it so it doesnt pop up at you, and instead, makes the decisions itself. I have never had a problem with auto-pilot mode, as the program is very smart. It has blocked certain websites, but it still lets you continue if you choose to. It’s a really good program all around and you should try it out!

Try Avast. Its always been reliable for me and detects viruses very quickly. Its also free as well so I would highly recommend it.

  13. johnathan on January 26, 2012 at 5:48 pm

In my opinion Avast security is the best and its FREE :) .

    Just buy a MAC

Most free utilities aren’t up-to-date and do not offer full coverage. I’d go with either ESET Nod32 or BitDefender total security. Both are awesome and Iv’e never had any problems with either. You also get customer support if you really need help.

  16. Random guy on January 26, 2012 at 6:35 pm

go to download.com and download avg antivirus, malwarebytes anti malware, and some of the other programs in the list of top installs

McAfee, I use this myself, It is a very good Internet/Computer security program. It blocks from going on the wrong websites (Like websites including VIRUSES and COOKIES) Also if you want there is parental control which enables the user from going on websites which are not “Age appropriate”.
Also at anytime you wish, run a full scan (Or quick scan) Of your whole computer. There is one downside, you have to pay for it (But you can download the FREE trial :D ) but it is worth it.

    AVG – http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage
    Avira – http://www.avira.com/en/for-home
    Avast – http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
    MSE – http://microsoft.com/security_essentials/

    All good, all free.

If you want to look at comparative tests between the various anti-virus programs then see

    http://www.av-comparatives.org/
    http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/index
    http://www.av-test.org/

As you can see, some of the free anti-virus programs do better than some of the paid ones.

No anti-virus, free or paid, is guaranteed to be 100% effective but you cannot run more than one without causing problems for yourself. Also, whichever you get, make sure you keep it updated.

    I use MSE

Moat computers are perfectly secure. I guess what you are looking for is security to protect the operating system that you are using. If you want security change your operating system.

just go http://www.comodo.com and download Internet security available at here http://bit.ly/sra2ks
    and download comodo internet security
its so strong including anti virus – firewall – anti fishing and….
and not like the other free products that are limited version of original commercial versions
the comodo is full version the same as commercial version, the only deference is the days of online support that is 60 days and not important,
    use it…

  21. Bassman1 on January 26, 2012 at 9:07 pm

The very best is Norton Internet Security 2012 or 360 by Symantec, have used it for years with out ever having a problem. I always buy the new version when the current one is about to expire and install the new version from the installation disc and get the 3 install license package.
Have been testing Microsoft Security Essentials from MS for free on my older laptop(s) and have had no problems so far, download here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials

    Norton :)

  24. DaCupCakePhiles on January 26, 2012 at 10:18 pm

Not Norton 360. Try McAfee. My family’s used it for years (decades really) and there’s been no problems ’till we switched to Norton (Because the idiotic computer support gave it to us because my computer – which didn’t have McAfee or anything on it).

  25. ANGEL EYES 01 on January 26, 2012 at 11:09 pm

I would say get Kaspersky as I have been using it for the last three years and it has not let me down yet.

  26. buzzard b8 on January 26, 2012 at 11:12 pm

Norton blows , it uses all your resources just so it can pop up a window and blame it on a different program. I use Microsoft Security Essentials, it isnt intrusive and I dont have any problems with it. But you asked that question about computing that nobody agrees on. lol

  27. hawkster97 on January 26, 2012 at 11:44 pm

Norton is the best security suite but Norton also presents lagging to your computer. Personally, i use Norton, but I have lots of RAM and an awesome processor to handle it. If your computer is not newer than i recommend ESET NOD32 Antivirus (http://www.eset.com) or Bitdefender Total Security (http://www.bitdefender.com)

Here are 4 linkend answers of me on the topic:
    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AqKZb6lcjES_SHN.t21se7Xty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20111106234252AAx8POb
    (starts with “i wrote 3″)

There is nothing wrong with getting a “security package” (antivirus + firewall) but i think (as i describe in the links) a seperate firewall and antivirus may be better. A firewall and antivirus/antimalware is not all the security you need though. You also need a systembackup strategy preferably more flexible and userfriendly then a simple recovery partition.

  29. ttn123 on January 27, 2012 at 12:54 am

According to top ten reviews it is Bitdefender but if you were to ask me it would be Norton. Yes some people will say Norton ha sucks but no. Maybe years ago but today Noton to most sites is the best.
