Question by Karl: A computer repair shop installed illegal software and a virus on my harddrive, should I report them?
I recently got my shop back from the repair centre and found a virus in the Windows services section. A type of invisable file monitoring one and an illegal copy of Windows 7 Installed, my question is should I report them or am I entitled to a refund?
Thanks for the respones so far, the computer is fixed. It was originally a Hardware/CPU problem and there was nothing wrong with the harddrive. Still they installed the files. So it doesnt need to be fixed and I can remove the virus myself, but its still very unprofessional and unscrupilous.

Do both, if possible.

    Hm.. The Computer’s Fixed? Yet it’s Not Legit Windows?

    So how did you Fix it Exactly? (By Cracking The OS?)

    And chances are the “Virus” Is a Crack.. Therefore a False Positive.
    See -> http://service1.symantec.com/sarc/sarc.nsf/info/html/what.false.positive.html

    It’s Probably been Added to Services For a Reason..
    And If Deleted it may cause a Problem with whatever it’s purpose is.

    I Would DEFINITELY Take it back and Demand a Refund and Threaten..
    Them with The LAW.. I’m sure they would be out of business if the Cops Knew.

    I’d Also Demand they Inform you of the state of your Computer..
    What is the “Virus” And why is it there in the 1st Place (It’s Purpose)

    Some Cracks get picked up as a Virus, It Could be for your Antivirus.

    Hope it helps :)

    You could take this up with your local trading standards. The virus/monitoring software might have been a legit install for troubleshooting, but it should have been removed. The Illegal windows may be your original copy, but de-activated by changing the hardware. I would talk to the repair shop first, and only go further if they offer no reasonable explanation. NB anything sounds reasonable if they say it well enough, so listen as much as complain
